Whose Son Is the Christ?
35 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
36 "For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
'The LORD said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." '
37 "Therefore David himself calls Him 'Lord'; how is He then his Son?" And the common people heard Him gladly.
When questions about Jesus’ true identity leave you wondering whether He is merely a great teacher or something far greater, Mark 12:35-37 reveals the significance of the Son who is both David’s descendant and David’s Lord.
The Question That Turns the Tables
While teaching in the temple, Jesus asks how the scribes can say the Christ is the Son of David when David himself, by the Holy Spirit, calls Him Lord. This single question exposes incomplete views of the Messiah. Believers today must move beyond seeing Jesus only as a historical figure and recognize Him as the exalted Lord who reigns forever.
Son of David Yet Greater Than David
Jesus quotes Psalm 110 to show that the Messiah is both David’s physical descendant and David’s superior. Only the God-Man can fulfill both realities at once. This truth anchors our faith when we feel insignificant or overwhelmed: the One who shares our humanity also sits at the right hand of God with absolute authority.
The Reign That Never Ends
Jesus’ death is not the end of the story. He will rule as King, and His reign will perfect forever everything He accomplished on the cross. Knowing this brings purpose and hope in seasons of waiting or spiritual struggle. Our calling is to live under His present lordship while anticipating His complete victory.
