Mark 8:11-21
11 Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him.
12 But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”....
15 Then He charged them, saying, "Take heed, beware the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
Mark 8:11-21. Seeking Signs
The religious leaders are disputing with Jesus and testing Him by requesting a sign from heaven!
They are setting the terms of validation for Jesus’s authority. They are settling themselves up as judges of the Messiah. The scriptures have already set the terms for validation of the Messiah. They have set themselves above the scriptures.
Jesus warns his disciples about the leaven or corrupting influence and sin of these leaders. These leaders who were meticulous in observing the external declarations of the law, but resisted and misinterpreted what the law said of the Messiah and the way of salvation through repentance and belief.
